WHAT I THINK IS WRONG IN AMERICA

Here we go with another opinion. Right now everyone is editorializing and giving their opinion as to what is wrong in America. If they can, then so can I. Here is what is wrong with America in my opinion. American Idol. America's Got Talent. The Voice. The Sing-Off. These shows are meant to make the networks money and to entertain. However, they have revealed a serious flaw in the human character of Americans. The shows will have auditions and tens of thousands of "wannabes" will show up. The all know they have little chance at all of making it. They still show up. I believe the reason is they all want the easy way to the top. Too many in America today do not want to work, do not want to pay any price, and believe they deserve the short cut. A TV network announces a tryout to win an impossible contest that the only person who will actually benefit is the network and thousands come and stand in the rain to try to win the million bucks. By the way, the million bucks is paid to the "winner" in an after-tax payment of $187.46 per week over a forty year period. The network gets millions and millions from advertisers and does not have to pay anyone on the show a dime. I wish I had thought of it.

Now. What if I told you that you could have a lovely home, make good money, drive a nice car, enjoy retirement, and have health insurance. Sounds pretty good. Come line up. Here's the catch. 100% of you can win. The line you get in is called HARD WORK. Pay the price. Stay after it. Do your job with enthusiasm and vigor. Why do that when you can follow the fantasy, stand in line to try out for the $187.46 bucks a week (fast food workers make twice that each week and only have to learn to say "Do you want fries with that?")and then blame everyone else for your hard luck. Stop blogging and complaining and shut up and go to work. The line is really short.

Which Way are You "Leaning" Today?

My wife and I took a nice "road trip" this weekend across southern Oklahoma to visit the beautiful Chickasaw Cultural History Center and Museum. One of the exhibits was particularly interesting to me. As the early Chickasaw tribe moved west from the current area which is Memphis, Tennessee they determined their direction of travel by using a "totem" pole. Each night when the group camped for the evening, the chief would stick the pole in the ground in a perpendicular position. In the morning, whatever direction the pole was "leaning" was the direction the tribe would travel that day. The morning the chief awoke to find pole had not "leaned" at all but remained upright was his indication they had arrived at their permanent location.
As I thought about this tradition it reminded me of the scripture in Proverbs 3:5 which reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and LEAN not unto your own understanding..." I had to stop and ask myself if I am following my own understanding or "leaning" on God for His direction and insight for the direction to follow each day. If I begin each day by "planting" the Word of God in my life and asking it for direction then my steps will certainly be ordered by a higher power who knows the exact path I need to take on my journey. What "pole" do you and I plant every day to see which way it "leans?" I trust it will always be the clear, concise, and encouraging Word of God. Which way are you leaning today?

DON'T WASTE THE GIFT YOU ARE GIVEN EACH SECOND...

I have enjoyed for decades the blessing of sitting in the "husbands" chair at a nice ladies dress shop while I waited for my wonderful wife to try on clothes. While she is in and out of the dressing room having the time of her life I can sit and reflect on how grateful I am that I am waiting on her and not someone else!
This past Saturday I found myself in that position once again. Ladies shops really know how to handle the guys. The chairs are almost always comfortable and there are lot's of copies of sports and business magazines available. The really nice ones have coffee. I leaned my head back into the recliner and closed my eyes to rest and wait until I heard her sweet voice when she appeared from the dressing room saying, "Honey, what do you think of this outfit?"
As I drifted into a doze the shop was so dead quiet I noticed I could feel my heart beating. Bump-bump. Bump-bump. On and on it beat steadily. As I listened I imagined that each beat was saying "A-gift," "A-gift," "A-gift." Every beat of your heart and of mine is indeed a wonderful gift from God. We can help the process by eating correctly and exercising but only God knows how many of those beats He will give us. In the average 70 year life span the human heart beats about 2.52 BILLION times. One day God, who counts and gives every beat as a gift, will say, "That's it, that was number 2,520,000,000" It will be over. Since we all know that is going to happen whether we like it or not why in heaven's name would we waste a single moment, of the gift of the beat this second of our heart? I see people every day who waste the precious gift of beat after beat with complaining, worry, fear, anger, hatred, selfishness, and bitterness. We all need to take life seriously. But don't waste the moments God has given you. Stop for a moment and get quiet. I think you will hear it beating out the words, "A-gift," "A-gift." Use that gift wisely.

So. Where Are My Book Sales?

She has been a dear friend, colleague, advisor, and supporter of our company and authors for many years. I received the following article from her and wanted to share her thoughts with the followers of my blog. She is as good as it gets in the industry and no one have more understanding of book marketing. We are honored to have her as a friend and consultant.

One of the most common dilemmas I encounter with many clients is the preconceived notions of what it takes to make sales. The problem with these preconceived notions is that they often misdirect people into thinking there is empirical evidence that lays out the sales cycle in absolutes. But, that just doesn't exist.

So, what IS real? Exposure is a real tangible element in a marketing and sales cycle, because without it, you can't sell a thing. Just as a candle under a bucket yields no light, a product or service that no one knows about will yield no sales. People have to know about you to do business with you.

Whether you are selling a book, a product or a service – exposure is the first and primary goal of marketing. While exposure doesn't guarantee sales, any hope of generating sales can only result from getting in front of your potential consumer. But, when your product receives that coveted exposure to the masses, the X-factors in play become whether or not consumers will like what they see. Your product will either be exactly what the consumer is looking for, or it won't.

I was talking to my senior strategist and he reminded me of the launch of New Coke back in the 1980s. Coca-Cola decided that Pepsi’s gains in the marketplace meant that consumers wanted a sweeter-tasting soda pop than Coke’s patented formula delivered. So, they scrapped their mainline product altogether and introduced New Coke with a multi-million dollar ad campaign featuring prime time darling Bill Cosby.

Their new product launch tanked. Consumers wanted their old Coke back. The moral of the story is that everyone in America had been exposed to New Coke. But, it also appeared that no one in America wanted to buy it. That’s the flip side of exposure, because great marketing doesn't make something a quality product, nor can it fool people into wanting something they wouldn't ordinarily buy. Your product must be able to stand on its own once it receives the exposure.

In the absence of empirical data, let’s take a look at some anecdotal data – specifically, your own. Ask yourself some simple questions. When was the last time you made a purchase of anything after being exposed to it only once? When was the last time an advertisement or an article about a product or service made SUCH an impression on you that you immediately made arrangements to buy it? If you’re like most consumers and business decision-makers, the answer to that question is either never, or rarely. The first step was that you were made aware of it, and perhaps after several exposures to that item, you then became interested in it.

Interest is what comes as a result of exposure, but interest doesn't necessarily get you reaching for your check book. Interest usually spurs you to get information. You research it online, you ask friends about it, you ask business associates to weigh in on it – you collect your OWN data. And if you still want more information, you may decide to contact the company and ask them about it. My point here is that there are hundreds of ways to act on interest that does not involve making a purchase, and each of those actions represents a series of decision points, at which you may still decide not to buy.

Short of climbing inside our heads, which some researchers are doing these days under the category of “behavioral research” to track how consumers make buying decisions, there is no ironclad way to track what happens with the consumer from the point of exposure to the point of sale. In the advertising world, you'll find a wide range of references about the frequency of advertising required to CAUSE a sale. But, my problem with those theories is they don't take into account what actions the buyer took during the “interest” phase of their buying process that really caused the decision to buy.

And that is my point, and it’s why I know the value of PR and it’s how I've been able to sustain and grow a thriving PR agency over the course of 20+ years, through recessions and economic downturns and absolute market upheaval. It’s because of this one truth: You can't sell anything without exposure that creates interest in the minds of the consumer. And PR is the most cost-effective and successful way of achieving that exposure and interest.

So, while good marketing and PR may not make record-breaking sales a mortal lock, you will never even be in the game without it.

HOW TO SELL 70 MILLION BOOKS-A CONVERSATION WITH JERRY JENKINS

We were delighted to have Jerry Jenkins visit Tate Publishing last week to discuss his future books, The Christian Writers Guild and Guide, and several other possibilities. We were honored he chose to come and discuss with us numerous options.

When it comes to selling books in the Christian publishing market, you won't find a much bigger name than Jerry B. Jenkins , co-author of the Left Behind series of books. Along with his co-author, Tim LaHaye, Jenkins has had 16 bestsellers in the series, with more than 70 million copies sold. To say Jenkins knows something about selling books is like saying a fish knows something about being wet.

Jenkins also heads the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild, which offers courses geared toward helping aspiring writers perfect their craft. It was in this role that Jenkins visited the offices of Tate Publishing today to take a tour and see what our company was all about. It's not everyday you get to do a Q & A with an author who has sold 70 million books about what it takes to sell those books. Surely, there must be some secret, right?

When I am given the opportunity to ask an author like Jenkins questions about book promotion and marketing, I try to do it from the standpoint of an author trying to make it in the industry, not as someone who sells books for a living. With this introduction now out of the way, I will let Jenkins explain how things work in the publishing industry, in his own words (from notes taken during our meetings).

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

"Too many authors think everything starts with their book. Starting your writing career with a book is like a five year old starting graduate school. Writers need to work up to their first book by writing articles and short stories and perfecting their craft."

What kind of expectations should a new author have with their first book?

"(New) authors are thoroughly unrealistic. They think that "if my book was just in a bookstore it would become a bestseller. If only I could get on Oprah." It takes word of mouth, telling people about your book, attending conferences, doing speaking engagements and getting the word out. Authors are going to do most of the work, and they need to. Publishers count on authors being the Number One salesperson. Nobody knows more about their book and can speak about it with more passion than the author."

Something that appeals to me about Tate Publishing is the personal attention they offer. This is a tough game, and if you are intimidated by the odds of making it in the publishing industry, this may not be the game for you. Use those long odds as a challenge to be one of the authors who do make it."

What is the difference between marketing your first book and promoting your more recent books?

"It really doesn't change. When Left Behind became a bestseller and was doing so well we just held on for dear life. Look at bestsellers as a season. They don't last, and one bestseller doesn't mean your next book is going to be a bestseller. Just because a book has my name on it or I wrote Left Behind doesn't mean it's automatically going to be a bestseller. It always takes work, speaking engagements and conferences. The work doesn't change regardless of success."

At this point, Jenkins' wife of 40 years, Dianna, pointed out that Jenkins hires his own publicists when it's time to promote another book.

What advice do you have for authors who are struggling with book sales?

Most authors miss it. They think most of the promotion starts at the beginning when the book is released. Most publishers stop promoting a book after six months to a year. New York publishers stop promoting after three months or less if the book doesn't take off. Then it's all on the author. When you still have 1,000 or 2,000 books left to sell, THAT'S the time to really start promoting. Hire a publicist. Get interviews. Speak at conferences. Connect with the audience with which you are an expert. Even if there are only 50 people there, that's 49 more people than you are talking to right now.

Nothing is going to happen automatically. Word of mouth is the best sales tool, and that should come from the author. There are no shortcuts."

Jenkins stated "If you are intimidated by the odds, you are in the wrong profession. It should be a motivation."

TATE PUBLISHING AND THE FACTS ABOUT "YOG'S LAW"

A few years ago an individual created out of thin air a concept he called "Yog's Law." I have no idea who "Yog" is or what planet he may be from but just like Superman there is "kryptonite" in this concept and that "kryptonite" is the facts. His over-simplistic “Money always flows to the writer” is his central argument. The problem with that concept is that he makes it sound like a movie script. Write a book, ask mom how good she thinks it is, send it to a publisher, they take it and make you a millionaire while you sit at home and watch TV. Of course writers should make money for their work, but the premise that they will never have to spend money if they publish, promote or market their books is incredibly naïve. I am close friends with several New York literary agents. I was speaking with one last week who has been in that business for decades. She was informing me of the high profile clients she represents who have to take their money to promote and buy their own books. She said that the publishers she works with are the bank and that they see their authors as having to do the work and are small businesses. At Tate Publishing we create for every first-time author an incredible opportunity to succeed. The support they get is over-the-top excellent and the few authors we sign out of the tens of thousands of unsolicited manuscripts we receive each year get the best product and support in the industry.

I have interviewed authors with other publishers for my own interest and we have a staff member in our marketing division who has shared some of his work and research with me as well. Here is a brief synopsis of their experience with those publishers:

Suzy Spencer: NYT bestselling author. In Suzy’s words: “I’ve had four books published. Of those four, I’ve had little marketing support from my publishers. I’ve never been allowed any contact with the sales teams, though I understand some publishers encourage such. As for public relations support, for my first book Wasted, which became a New York Times bestseller, I believe my publisher sent out a few review copies. By that I mean I provided names and addresses of friends in the media and my publisher mailed them copies of the book and, from what I understand, a note that said here’s a book by Suzy Spencer. There was no publicity packet included. No sales pitch of what the book was about or why they would be interested in it.” Suzy herself hired a publicist and mailed out push cards.

Tom Llewellyn: Tom stated that his book The Tilting House sold about 8,000 copies. His marketing support, in his words: “Not as much as I expected (he says, while hoping he sounds grateful to be published at all). They sent out promotional copies, distributed the book in their catalog, blogged about it and sent me a whole bunch of customized bookmarks. A very talented designer friend of mine built a cool website (www.thetiltinghouse.com) and created a book trailer you can see there as well. I setup and completed interviews in local newspapers. I held a pretty massive book launch party—about which the publisher’s rep said it was the biggest launch party she’d ever seen. I’ve done a whole bunch of author talks at local schools and still continue to do them. And I’ve done a whole bunch of blog interviews—kind of like this one.” Tom paid for his own marketing, the construction of his web site and his own book launch party. By the way, after the interview, discontinued the imprint, and Tom has no publisher at all.

My favorite: Sheila Kelly, NYT bestselling author of Twilight Fall. You can see a copy of one of her royalty statements here: http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/LynnViehl/TFRoyaltyStatement1.jpg Sheila was actually paid an advance of $50,000 for her book. She did not receive a third of that until the book was published. Her agent got $7,500 of the advance. Uncle Sam took $15,000 in taxes. After her other expenses, she actually received $26,000 of her $50,000 advance. Her net earnings from her royalty statement in the link are about $27,000, after returns and holdbacks. Because her publisher has not yet recouped the advance they kept their share, so her net earnings from this royalty statement were, wait for it, $0. That’s right, she sold $46,000 worth of books the quarter she became a NYT bestseller and didn’t receive any of it. Her credited earnings on her next royalty statement were about $2,500, which her publisher also kept to repay her advance.
In Sheila’s words: “My income per book always reminds me of how tough it is to make at living at this gig, especially for writers who only produce one book per year. If I did the same, and my one book performed as well as TF, and my family of four were solely dependent on my income, my net would be only around $2500.00 over the income level considered to be the U.S. poverty threshold (based on 2008 figures.) Yep, we’d almost qualify for food stamps.” To date, she has made about $24,000 off Twilight Fall, mainly from her advance. She didn’t expect to see any actual royalties from her book for another 1-2 years.

In contrast, one of our authors, who is not a NYT bestselling author, has made at least $75,000 off the sales of her three titles with us, and that all went into her pocket.
Money flows to the author? Authors with other publishers pay plenty, and don’t have it nearly as well as our authors do. Sure, J.K. Rowling and James Patterson are multi-millionaires, but they have each cranked out several books, have movie deals, and have to sell an incredible volume of books. They are in the extreme minority, of which I am certain Mr. Yog’s Law is not a member.

TATE PUBLISHING AND MY OPINION OF WHINERS, BLOGGERS, AND COMPLAINERS

Those of you who follow my blog may not know that our professional staff monitors our presence world wide. I have never written a blog this long but I feel a need to write a “book” today to get some things off my chest. We have a company on retainer that provides information to us when our name, the name of any of our companies, the name of any book we have published or author name in our entire history, or the name of any author or potential author who has submitted to us our contacted us, appears anywhere on the internet or in any media source.
We contact individuals immediately with any concerns or issues and see every one. If you think you can tweet, Facebook, blog, or mention us on a radio show in Tokyo and we do not know, forget it. We see and hear them all and decide what to do and how to reply. If you want to say it, we have a right to hear it. Serious authors who want accurate information are a joy to work with. My problem is that I am stunned on the rare occasion we have a whiner or complainer. The ludicrous statements people make on the web are simply amazing. We give advances to qualifying authors all the time. We pay for 100% of the production, printing and distribution of books we accept. If an author does not have marketing and publicist representation we will pay for that as well and all they are required to invest is a one set up fee which can even be refunded to them under certain situations. If they have qualifying representation we will accept that and there is no set-up fee. We receive tens of thousands of unsolicited submissions and contacts each year and only single digit percentages are considered by our staff. If an author does not qualify for an advance or for us to absorb all the financial risk involved we will even send them a lengthy list of publishers who still consider giving advances as we do and let them contact them directly. They find that they never get an advance from them if they cannot get one from us. The standards are the same. It is more about the author today than about the book.
However, I am stunned when we offer the only and best option for a first-time author in the industry and these individuals whine and complain that we are horrible, ruining their lives, and making the biggest mistake we have ever made by rejecting their book and not giving them an advance or willing to take all the risk. We have learned in the hard knocks of this business that when an unknown author has no risk they are a very questionable author when it comes to their work ethic. Just try going to your bank with a “fabulous” money making idea and see if you can find any banker who will invest in the project and take 100% of the risk. It will not happen. The car dealer, mortgage lender, bank, and Sears expect you to have some risk. But, if an author can bring something to the table we are more than happy to bank roll the whole deal.
My wife and high school sweetheart suggests to me that I am letting my 60++ years get to me and that I was in the intense discipline and honor of the United States Marine Corps one day too many. My age may be a factor but I simply CANNOT STAND whiners and complainers. I read bloggers whining about everything from the popcorn at the movie theatre to the channels they cannot get on cable. It simply drives me nuts. I know I was born in the 40’s and the Second World War had just ended. I know I have had to work for everything I have ever gotten. But today, in America, there is such a wave of entitlement among Americans that it is simply sickening to me. I know that many of you reading this will probably agree with me and some of you will despise me and think you have had such a hard life that you “deserve” a break and I simply don’t understand. Don’t try to go after the hard life story with me or most of the successful business friends I have. Life is challenging and demanding and success comes from never giving up and hard work. Everyone has a hard luck story, myself included. Get over it and get on with your life.
I read an article in the paper this week that caused me to think about our country and the whiners and complainers. That article was the catalyst which caused me to want to write this “War and Peace” length blog and share these thoughts.
A century ago America was the land of the free. Americans had incentive to survive and did not complain or whine about what they were “entitled” to or deserved. I read an article by a national “whine” organization where the executive director stated, “Every American is entitled to and deserves a nice home and nice car to drive. It is their inalienable right!” What a load of nonsense that is. You and I are not entitled to anything but the freedom of choice and the opportunity to work hard toward our goals and have a government that will stay out of our way and try to help and not hinder. The Americans of my birth voted and made decisions for which they took personal responsibility and they always had some skin in the game. Before Social Security Americans averaged saving 15% of their income. Today, it’s less than 3%. Before the great depression there was no unemployment insurance or whiner fund. It is not all government’s fault that citizens today do not have any “skin in the game.” We live in what appears to be a society filled with people who do not want to take a risk, want it to come quickly and easily and believe there should be a “some one else should pay” safety net for every decision they make whether good or bad. We are fooling ourselves if we think our government will save us. Ronald Regan knew that the flaw of big government was to serve the entitlement attitude with government transfer payments and subsidies that would make for a weak society and lazy working class. Thomas Jefferson said, “When the government has the power to give the people what they want without working for it that same government will have the power to take from the people whatever it wants.” Stop whining and get to work. If you own a business, are an author, have a dream, get after it and stop whining. More and more of us are tired of hearing it. Get off your behind at the blog-puter whine machine and get busy working. No one cares anymore and no one is listening to you. They know you need to get to work

TATE PUBLISHING, YOGI BERRA, AND A WEEPING WILLOW TREE

Friends and followers,

Most of my younger readers will not remember the great New York Yankee catcher Yogi Berra. He was not only one of the great Yankees of all time but was an absolutely hilarious philosopher. His book of sayings (Yogisms they were called) are very entertaining to say the least. One of his most familar sayings was, "It ain't over 'til it's over!"
Over the years Tate Publishing & Enterprises has grown to the huge success we enjoy today through good times and challenging times. I have never been one to give up. Yogi's statement is encouraging us to keep on keeping on no matter what the circumstances.
As an author, your desire is to find readers. It takes a top notch publisher such as our company investing in your work to make that happen and it also takes determination on your part as an author. You must never give up. I remember standing in the office of our buyer in the large press division of one of the biggest chains in America. We sell an incredible amount of books to that national chain. Bryan Norris and Mark Mingle who lead our marketing divisions are part of the team that goes to New York City each month to pitch the books we publish. Bryan asked her, "What are you looking for in authors right now?" Her answer was immediate. "I want books by authors who are willing to work. I am more concerned about the work ethic of the author than I am about the book." Great insight.
My wife and I spend a great deal of time with our yard and gardening. Three years ago we planted a tiny weeping willow tree. That spring the slim trunk of the tree and two or three tiny branches prepared for the spring growing season. The trunk of that tree was no more than a half inch thick. It finally sprouted a couple of branches and we braced it with a metal pole to give it stability. Overnight an Oklahoma spring storm did disastrous work on the tiny Willow. The storm had broken the tree loose from its metal mooring and its only limb had been broken and now hung limp. We decided it was probably dead and would not survive and at only four feet tall we felt the outcome was determined. It would die. As a last resort and believing "it ain't over 'til it's over" we trimmed off the broken branches, re-attached it to the metal pole for stability and kept on watering the pitiful little remainder. It was NOT over. That spring branches began to appear. Then more leaves. The next season it grew larger and taller. It was fighting the odds. Last weekend my wife and I were sitting in our breakfast nook having a Saturday morning cup of coffee when we noticed the first sign of spring leaf buds on that weeping willow which stood just outside the window. The metal post supporting the tree in it's infancy is long gone. It now stands firmly and proudly on its own. The Oklahoma storms cannot break it now. In only a few short years it has become a survivor and its shade graces our yard and our grandchildren find great fun in running through the dangling and dainty branches. The long slender branches which brush the ground are healthy and strong. The tree towers over the yard and is now almost twenty five feet high. The tree did not give up. We did not give up on the tree. My encouragement to you as an author is to never give up. Keep trimming back the dead stuff and ideas which are not working. Keep watering and working and telling your story. One day you can say about your project what we can say now about that once tiny willow tree. Success is mine.

4-BE PERSISTENT AND DO NOT GIVE UP REGARDLESS OF THE CHALLENGE

Every person reading this blog has taken a stick or broom and destroyed the detailed, tedious, and impressive work of the spider. We all have “taken down” a spider web at one time or another. Every one of us reading this email has worked our heads off to get a sale, sell a book or get a task completed only to find that all of our efforts were "pulled down" by other people or circumstances we could not control. We have all had experiences when we gave a 110% effort to be the best we could be with people to find that they walked away and took a “stick” and tore down our beautifully designed and prepared work and plan. Be persistent. Don’t give up is a worn out phrase but is still true and needs to be our daily mantra. I have discovered it takes about 6 “no’s” until you can finally get to the “yes.” The spider comes back from the hunt, finds you have destroyed his work on the back porch, and says, “Fantastic, I see they did it again, tore down my web. I will just build a better one this time” and gets back to work. However, the spider just keeps on building and is always in Kings’ palaces. Don’t give up. If you are a quitter, get a job where the most difficult thing you have to do is ask, “Do you want fries with that?”
I was in a meeting Thursday with a gentleman who is a legend in the music business, Roy Clark. He wants to do his book with us about his life and experiences. He made a very fitting statement to me about his success. He said that it did not come easy. It took work, work, and more work, and then more persistence before there was any consideration of being in the Hall of Fame. There will be lot's of destroyed dreams and roadblocks on your way to success. See each one of them as an opportunity to grow and know.

3-COOPERATE, SEEK HELP, AND KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS AND THE POWER OF THE TEAM
The Locust is simply lost without the swarm. A swarm can destroy ten thousand acres of grassland in Africa in less than an hour one bite at a time multiplied by a billion munches. In order to cross water the first Locusts’ to arrive at the stream throw themselves into the river and die. As the mound of dead Locust pile up the remaining billion or more following cross safely on the bridge composed of the dead bodies of their swarm. They are, in a very unusual way, the best example of TEAM on the planet. Each of us must do OUR individual job…one bite…our bite. Then with all of us taking our personal responsibility, the entire team succeeds. Cooperate, seek help, know your strengths and work in those every day, and make sure you do not let the team down…whatever sacrifice is necessary. Whatever it takes to achieve the goal by cooperating, making sacrifices, knowing the strength of “one bite at a time”, and the power of team makes us, and the swarm of locust, unstoppable.

In my last post (you can refresh your memory and read the post below) I introduced the four laws for success with a business or as an author. Law two takes you to an incredibly important place in managing your decisions.

2-USE HISTORY AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES TO MAKE WISE CHOICES NOT EMOTIONS
The Conie is a small rabbit like creature that lives in the mountains. The Eagle and Hawk love the tasty little guy. However, history, good information, and practical experience has told the Conie that the safe place is not out in the open but to dash from rock hidden protection to rock hidden protection. The Conie knows how to outwit and not submit. He knows the way to success and long life is not to try to get emotional and shake his fist at the predator but to outsmart him. He may not be as strong as the Eagle but he knows the rock is stronger and uses it to his benefit. The key is to stay alive. Each of us must look at our individual tasks and be smart, use accurate data from real history, and not be emotional about it and plant ourselves where we will bloom. The Conie knows its limitations and overcomes them. Each of us must do the same thing each day. Make wise choices with the correct information you have and you will stay alive and succeed.

MY WEEKLY SERIES AND PLAN THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU IN 2011 FROM TATE PUBLISHING

To my friends and followers,

There are tens of thousands of books on the market that will tell you how to be successful. However, in my opinion the only book that is dead on correct 100% of the time is the Bible. The principles there are without fail and have the backing of the highest power that exists. As we make every decision related to this business as well as our individual responsibilities, there are some unfailing elements which must be the foundation of our work. I felt that at the beginning of 2011 these same principles might be helpful to you as well who follow this blog. I am introducing the first of our important principles today and will continue each week until you have all four.

These four principles are found in Proverbs 30:24-29.

"There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces."

1-PREPARE FOR CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULT TIMES
The Ant knows that winter is coming when there will be no food. We each know that challenges are coming and each of us must work diligently to prepare. The successful person does not wait until the last minute but gets after it now! The winter (some personal challenge) is coming and if the ant waited until the first snowfall it would be too late. There will be difficult times and difficult people. Get after each immediately. All of the efforts of the little ant is for one purpose…to take care of and feed the queen. The food the workers take, the army ants take, and the nurse room ants take, is exactly what they need to stay on point and make it possible for them to get food to the queen to make more little ants. Your “queen” is your personal success and ability to achieve your goals. As we prepare to make our goals and then achieve them, we get what we need and our dreams and visions remain profitable, stable, and on target. Daily is the key…inch by inch anything is a cinch. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. When we prepare and plan we are stable, and our future is secure when the winter storms come.

I appreciate the fact that every one worked hard to make my book the most entertaining and professional book possible. I know I am no where near your only author but the staff that was assigned to me made me feel that I was their most talented, best-selling author.

It has been my intent to do this for some time; however...you know us Author's...always "gettin'-n-goin' and forgetting to get to the important things..." (I'm kidding of course, but I should have done this weeks/months ago!)

I want you to know how ultimately thrilled I have been with Tate Publishing's services, peoples, communications and developmental procedures during the production work with my book! It would, in fact, be an understatement to simply state my intent of thanks as "awesome(!)" because the entire process provided me an overall unforgettable, positive, experience beyond what I can easily express. Not only was the production work completed in a timely manner, it was done speedily as well - and with no lack of quality! My "team" of folk who worked with me were all quite helpful, considerate, understanding, easy to talk to/communicate with, and willing to do whatever it took to complete their involved stages of work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Little "lag time" was involved, and things moved along rapidly...and usually even ahead of schedule! Needless to say, I am extremely happy with Tate's overall system and peoples in readying my work to be presented to the world...

Speaking of my "team"...
The book I now have out is the first of two to tell the entire "original" story (more books coming in the follow-up series later!), and since I am so very highly pleased with those I worked with, I am hoping you will consider allowing me to have the same team when time comes for production on the "continuance" novel. My intention toward "why" is as follows:
First, I came to know most of them well, as they did with me, on a more "personal" level through our communications. They are already familiar with my own work ethics and "ways of wanting/needing to do things according to the content of writings" - including the way "I" work...my intentions, goals, desires, interactions with them, etc. - as well as being familiar now with my style of writing and "purpose of content" within the storyline.
Secondly, I am also familiar with how they each work and/or "operate" within their separate fields of expertise...(and wow, am I impressed!)
Third, in regarding my first two points, I would see it being highly beneficial and productive to again work with "familiarity" rather than having to basically start over with someone new. This, of course, includes everyone from Acquisitions to Final Hard-copy...(ready for marketing and mass distribution)
Fourth, and with all the above in mind, I see this as a way to take production through an even speedier process!
...Perhaps you may agree? I hope so...because getting this second half "out there" is imperatively important, as it is "the story!" Without it, the first is merely an unfinished storyline (...everyone I know who has read the "beginning" is highly anxious for the continuance/conclusion). In fact, the sooner it gets out, the more it will generate sales for the first book as well.

Please pardon my "ramble" there, but the excitement I am feeling from what Tate Publishing has done for me is phenomenal! I cannot help but to want to get things rolling again - as soon as possible. Truthfully, I have found that the production process in and of itself is quite the exhilarating "ride," and I'm anxiously awaiting to get started again! Now...if I can just get Marketing to rev up their engines, amp up the energies, and put us in position to quickly move forward...

Thank you both again for providing the services of a truly honest and integrated publishing company that is inspirational, forward moving, highly professional, and most of all, treats its "clients" with the integrity, respect and guidance that makes us ALL successful! Only about 2% are considered for our investment and publication. KIND OPINION ABOUT TATE PUBLISHING FROM A POTENTIAL AUTHOR

To Tate Publishing Staff,
I am not an established author, but I am hoping to become one. I just recently sent in several chapters of a book in which I am beginning a series for. It is not a completed book, or even an edited version of one. Simply nothing more than several roughly written chapters of a work that I am expanding on. Tate publishing did a very nice, complete and thorough job of explaining exactly what they do and exactly what they expect on their website. There was no doubt in my mind exactly what I was doing when I sent them the few chapters of the uncompleted book that I am working on. They quite specifically said that they would be happy to READ the portion that I had written to see if I actually had something that they MIGHT be interested in. I find absolutly no misrepresentation in this what-so-ever. This to me was a refreshing site to come upon after so many other less than honest sites. IF, by some chance that Tate decides that my works is in any way good enough to use me as one of their writters then I look forward to writting for them as I know that my works would be well taken care of. IF, they should decided that my works is not of their quality then I would have to believe that they took the time to check it over fairly. However whether or not they choose to publish my works or not has no bearing on how I will feel about the honesty of this company. I would have to say that if they do not choose your works, get over it. They are doing a great public service for as many writters as they possibly can and they should be commended for holding to a high set of standards. Weather or not they are the best is all opinion based. But having an A+ rating with the B.B.B. alone says a lot for them. Christian says the rest. Hats off to an honest publisher in a world of dishonest ones.

TATE AUTHOR EXTENDS GRATITUDE FOR PROFESSIONALISM

As a new author of children's stories I have found that getting published is not as easy as one would think. I am not an artist nor do I know how to work a computer program that will help me to do the artwork. To my regret I have invested in several programs that do not work. I want to go over what I have accomplished with Tate Publishing. I now have an artist at Tate Publishing who knows what I want and will help create my characters with an eye to new trends and marketability. I have enjoyed their professionalism which has been top notch. I had to put up a a refundable co-investment to help me get in to the market that I have no way of getting into on my own. This fee assists in the cost of someone else to do the art work which quotes from other companies and artists have been twice as high and when the book sells I get that investment refunded to me. Do I believe that I will automatically become a best seller with Tate. No I don't. I have to sell my work and what my work stands for. However, Tate Publishing is providing me with a chance to make it. Look at POD's and then look at what Tate Publishing has to offer. You will find it has integrity. To believe in yourself and then have a publishing company behind you who will return phone calls and emails the same day is unbelievable. Would I recommend Tate to other writers heck yes. I have already.

When you are as large a company as is Tate Publishing you are not below the radar. We observe daily bloggers, internet sites, media outlets, newspapers, and everything else across the planet where our name or the names of our authors are mentioned. We see them all and reply in kindness. There is so much confusion in the world about publishing we discount most of the foolishness due to a lack of understanding. We always offer a contact for anyone on any blog site and to date after offering that many times we still do not have a taker. It makes me aware of the fact that folks who are rejected by our company (98% are who submit) don't handle that very well. That is understandable. However, our authors many times see these blogs and reply themselves. They are the best source of understanding. We have carried an A+ rating with the BBB for years and plan to continue to operate in a manner that will see that continue. The posts below are for your insight. I do not understand why so many people keep saying such wretched things about Tate, I got offered a contract, and If you actually talked with them.......they are soo..willing to work with people if they want to! That of course is up to them, I haven't had a bad experience yet..I can't wait til my book is printed!! I think they are amazing so far...and I am sure they will exceed my expectations! I recently had my first book published by Tate, and it was just released... I wrote this book last year when I was deployed to Iraq. I never planned on writing a book, but God put this in my spirit while in the desert. The day that I arrived home on American soil from Iraq, I got online and looked for Christian publishers and Tate seemed to be the most credible. I emailed them my manuscript and they called me the same day to tell me they wanted to publish my book. I was very excited about this because I am a "nobody" in this industry and Tate wanted to bring me in. The publishing process was kind of lengthy but I was kept informed of everything that was happening. I had the final "say so" of anything concerning my book and I was impressed by the follow up of any issue I addressed. I was very satisfied by my book cover design and the book layout. My book is in all bookstores nationwide along with having done some television interviews that can be seen on YouTube. I am new to this industry but my vision for my book is a motion picture and music sountrack, thus proving that our God is almighty. The publishing arm of our company was thrilled to have the long time manager of the Oak Ridge Boys to publish his breakout book with us, "How to Make it in the Music Business." It is a fantastic book written by Jim Halsey who has managed and created the careers of some of the top names in the music industry.

He was visiting with us this week when country music artist of the year Mr. Neal McCoy was in town talking with us about several projects. TATE PUBLISHING CHILDREN'S BOOKS SET NEW STANDARD-3-D!!!

When my son, who is President and CEO of our companies told me he had challenged our production staff to come up with a way to create our children's books in 3-D I never doubted him and our staff for a second.

Only two weeks later, we began to roll off the presses the only 3-D children's books in existence. Every Tate Publishing children's book will now be available in a 3-D version with glasses included in the book for viewing.

When I saw the final product I was absolutely amazed! On each page it appears you can "reach into" the action. What a great benefit to each of our authors. Once again, our fine staff have raised the bar to a new level of achievement. 3-D children's books today and who knows what amazing things will come tomorrow? Hologram books??? Don't put it past them at all...

AN AMAZING TATE PUBLISHING AUTHOR STORY...JUST AMAZING...

Dr. Tate,

When I first started writing my book I knew it would be hard for me to do because I am mostly bed ridden. I wrote the book from laying flat and I had a broken arm from passing out do to my pyhsical disability. But, I told my husband if one person's life changes because of my book then it will be worth all the hard work.

I was sitting at my book signing saturday with my legs up and my iv flowing and a lady stopped and grabbed my hand and asked, "are you L.A.?" She began to cry, saying her life has been changed because of the book. She said she suffers from my rare condition and found the book a month earlier and couldn't believe there was a book on her condition even on the shelf. She said I had to drop to my knees I was overwhelmed to finally find someone who could relate to my illness. She then said she no longer feels sorry for herself. She said I attend church and thought I new Jesus as my Savior, but after reading your book I knew I was not saved. She said she followed the prayer on the last page of the book and asked Jesus into her heart. She said, I cannot begin to tell you how over the last month how my life has changed because of your book. You saved my life, I was living for myself and now I am living for Jesus Christ and I can handle my illness better. Tears flowing down her face, she thanked me. Her husband was with her and said, yes, she is totally changed and is helping others.
I knew right away she was that one person I was talking about while writing and editing the book. Two people bought the book for their doctor to read and to place in their offices.
For me it isn't about how many books I sell, but that the people who need Jesus will find the book. Even if it is a few hundred. I could have left God out and sold the book to more sick people.

Thank again for giving me a voice, for so many years I have written,faxed, emailed, beggged , pleaded and cried because I was never heard, but Tate gave me a voice, a voice. Thank you for letting me tell the world that I do believe in Jesus Christ, that he is my life and He is the answer to my problems.

Many of you may not know that Tate Publishing owns and operates a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art print facility here near our corporate offices in Oklahoma City. We just recently completed an 8,000 square foot additon to accommodate our growth and business has just never been better. We are adding new staff each month. One area we have wanted to bring in house for some time and are finalizing at this moment is the ability to produce dust jacket case bound (hardback) versions of our books and children's books. We are about to purchase the equipment which will make that happen and once again we will move to the front of the class in the publishing industry. Hardback is coming very soon and I will keep you informed.

One of the most exciting things we are doing as one of the largest producers of full-color children's books in the nation was a recent concept of my son, Ryan, who is President and CEO of both our publishing and music divisions. He has led the staff to be able to develop the technology to produce and release each of our beautiful children's book in the standard color versions and also in full color 3-D!!!!! Each 3-D book will come with an enclosed pair of 3-D glasses for viewing. Tate Publishing not only continues to lead the industry in so many areas but also sets new standards and raises the bar every single day. I wanted to take a moment to thank the Tate Publishing family for helping me share my story. I grew up being different and not knowing why until I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 22 in October of 2007. Last year I decided to share my story because so many parents of little children who have Asperger's now have asked me what life has been like. I think they want to get an idea of what the teenage years and adulthood can be like for their kids. I'd also like to reach a wider market than just those who have Asperger's or autism which is why I'm even more excited to be working with Tate Publishing because while someone else might have published my story, their target audience primarily focuses on people with autism or people who work with autistic individuals. I would like the entire world to understand what autism and Asperger's Syndrome are.
I would like to do a lot of speaking about autism and my life and also already have a few places asking to host book signings. I'm extremely impressed with Tate Publishing. Thank you so much for publishing my book... For years I have been silenced from a horrible disease that know one knew about... Thanks to Tate publishing, people who have never heard of it are learning what it is and how it effects our lives. Others tell me they couldn't put the book down, and they are not sick, but it made them appreciate the fact that they can go out side and see the sun and feel the wind, unlike myself.
Over the past decade I have written everyone (publishers) I could think of over and over and have never heard back, making me feel so unwanted, so unimportant. I do not want to be a celebrity,but it is my prayer that maybe I can get...others in the world to know what is wrong with them. IT is a disease people have and it takes them five years to get a diagnosis. IF they could hear my story they would find support on my website. It would help thousands. I did have to go by ambulance on a stretcher for my book signing, but it was great, lives were touched and one person has already come to know Christ.
I want to thank you from deep in my heart for letting me finally talk, and tell my story to help others. Words cannot express what publishing this book means to me, because it is helping so many people. My release date hasn't even come yet and I have sold several hundred books.

I recently began a study of the leadership principles of the great president, Abraham Lincoln. True leadership seems to be absent in American politics and business culture. I am amazed at the systems in place in businesses, schools, and even in families which are considered to be good leadership.
The sixteenth president would have been dismayed, in my opinion after reading his words, at the sad state in America. Lincoln wanted his subordinates to be productive, successful, and enjoy their work with a passion.

James Burns stated, "Leadership is leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations-the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations-of both leaders and followers. The genius of leadership lies in the manner in which leaders see and act on their own and their followers values and motivations."

By modern standards Lincoln's success would be considered nothing short of a miracle. He was a man who really knew how to lead.

Although it is beneath the dignity of the company and the authors to reply to some of this, I will instead write about my own experience and let authors decide themselves.My name is Cliff Graham. I live in San Antonio, TX, and am a real author, not a Tate Publishing "crony." I published my first book with them, "Call of Duty," in 2008. The process went exactly according to how it was presented to me, with neither rosy promises nor cynicism. It has done just fine for a nonfiction title written by an author with no national platform for a niche market.Based upon the quality of my second book, a novel about King David's Mighty Men titled, "Day of War," I was offered a different and more personally beneficial contract than the author investment contract I initially paid. This was unsolicited and a pleasant surprise, as my first book had only been out for a few months when I submitted the second manuscript. So Tate took a risk on me. An actual financial risk on an unknown author. That sounds a lot like traditional publishing, right?Everything went great, from acquisitions to editing. The book was selected as a Top Pick for special presentation to buyers at Barnes and Noble in New York City. Tate, along with every other publisher, picks the books that they believe will be the most marketable and presents them to these buyers. I had no say in that process, nor did I pay anything for it. That pushed the release date of the book to September 29, 2009, six months later than I initially thought. Which was fine, because the Barnes and Noble buyer did indeed pick up the title for regional distribution in Texas. That means that on or near the release date, the book will be on actual store shelves in Barnes and Noble. If it is successful there, they will pick it up for broader distribution.Things took an interesting turn when the filmmaker David L. Cunningham (The Path to 9/11, To End all Wars) read my book (after coming across my website, http://www.lionofwar.com). He loved it so much that he contacted Tate Publishing immediately for the film rights. I as the author own all the rights to the book, so they put him through to me after carefully screening to make sure he was who he said he was. Cunningham brought me up to Dallas where he was working on a project and we had a meeting that lasted several hours, during which he communicated his vision for the film and for the rest of the books in the series. I left the meeting convinced that he was the right guy to make the movie. On August 24, 2009, I signed a six-figure option deal for the rights to my book (no I am not instantly rich, it takes time for money to be doled out in the film industry). Representatives from Tate Publishing helped me incalculably along the way. I was assisted by attorneys as well. It is in the very early phase of development, but progress has been swift. There will be a press release in Daily Variety (The Wall street Journal of Hollywood) in the coming weeks with the names of the people attached and involved in development. Please look for it either in print or at www.variety.com, and look for the line about "published by Tate Publishing." Individuals involved during this process were:Director/Producer David L. CunninghamUnited Talent Agency representatives Ramses IsHak and Mike Sheresky.Attorney Patti Felker (the 2008 Entertainment Attorney of the Year)Tate Publishing Marketing Representative Jim MillerTate Publishing Marketing Director Mark MingleAll of this, and the book has not even officially released yet.I am currently finishing the second novel in the series that Cunningham and his production partners are developing into a major motion picture franchise. I intend to stay with Tate Publishing, because they are the future of the industry. I don't want to leap out of the battleship for a luxury suite on the Titanic.I say things so matter-of-fact because it is important to deal with facts when you are trying to be heard amidst the whining of people of questionable intent. I am very disappointed for any business that struggles and fails. In our business, marketing is king. It is for that reason we have the best in the business here in the Oklahoma City office and also in the Tulsa marketing office. Book shows just are not doing well and even though our professional marketing staff continue to attend those shows we have known for some time that our efforts one-on-one with the buyers at the chains we sell to and with the distributors and wholesalers is the best way to go. Our authors get one-on-one marketing help. We actually sit on the offices of the buyers and present our titles on behalf of our authors. Cancellatons such as the one reported below are more and more common but have no real effect our what our marketing people do in person and with the author. Business and sales are booming with Tate Publishing.

Christian Book Expo Canceled For 2010

Publisher's Weekly reports that the first Christian Book Expo in Dallas was not a success due to poor attendance. The event won't be held next year. The show won't go on in Dallas. The Christian Book Expo, an innovative consumer-focused book show, won’t be repeated next year. The board of Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, show sponsor, decided not to stage another event in 2010. Attendance at this year's show, held March 20-22 at the Dallas Convention Center, was 1,500; organizers had hoped for 10,000 to 15,000. The show left the organization with a $250,000 shortfall, according to ECPA president and CEO Mark Kuyper. "We want to clean up the debt before we consider future options," Kuyper told PW in an e-mail.
There is a great market for such an Expo, but the timing couldn't have been worse for the Expo's debut year. With the recession and massive cutbacks in consumer spending, this just wasn't the best time for a new book convention.

My blog usually sounds like a proud father. I get so many dozens of wonderful emails from our authors about their great experiences that I simply have to share them. I was criticized by an anonymous blogger the other day on this site who told me to "shut up" about how great our authors are. I am sure his courage would have directed him to give me his phone contact so we could chat but that would be too much dignity to face his remarks. When Charles Dickens wrote these amazing words above he must have had a telescope to time travel to 2009.
My heart breaks with the anger I see and hear in people. So few seem to be responsible any more. Maybe it is because I am pushing 65 years on this planet. Maybe I am just a good observer. People say things that are just cruel. At the store, at school, at work, at church...people are just angry. The internet has given these bullies a platform to hide, that right, to HIDE behind a computer. I dare say that the angry, sarcastic people who get under your skin would not have the gumption to say those words to your face.
Our company has never enjoyed greater success. We just added over 6,000 square feet of beautiful new state-of-the-art facilities for our growing staff. Our sales for our authors has never been greater in our history and each quarter for years it has grown.
I ask you to join me in refusing to believe the "boo birds" who just want to complain and not to act. Don't fall prey to the cynical, do-it-for-me attitude which permeates so many in this generation. Be kind. Be kind.

Good afternoon all! I want to let you know that I am having a very pleasant experience with Tate Publishing. My book is entitled The Adventures of a Common Man. I am a 1st time author and know next to nothing about the world of publishing. I researched many companies, but choose Tate because of the positive things I read about it on blogs and the fact that you publish family friendly material. This is a decision I do not regret.

Every contact I have had from Melissa Huffer to Jaime Bode has been uplifting. When talking with me, all seem to make me feel as if I am the only person on their agenda and there is no hurry. Also, all listen and make comments that indicate my words were indeed heard and understood. When Melissa told me Tate would like to offer me a contract, she actually told which part of my book she enjoyed the most and "why". I was totally blown away by that.

During my initial interview with Jaime Bode (my conceptual editor), it was evident to me that she was extremely interested in helping me write a better book. I did not expect to hear from her again until the end of this month, but I received an e-mail from her telling me that she was "fully engrossed" in my book and suggested that I had done a good job on it. I do not know if that is standard procedure to say, but it sure makes one feel good.

I truly appreciate the words of encouragement and positive feelings your staff project.

I can not wait to see the final outcome and hope that it a success for both of us.

I am a Tate Publishing author. I am not sure who this man is talking about, but that is nothing like my experience at Tate.

From the moment I was accepted and offered a contract, all of my dealings with Tate Publishing have been exceptional. The staff has been courteous and helpful. I am a first time author and have had many questions and concerns.

I wanted to be in a partnership, as well. I did my research and found it is very difficult for a first time author to get a deal. Tate has taken a chance on me and I was willing to deplete my savings for an opportunity to get my book published. I have not gone into this expecting to become a millionaire. I have a story to tell and they have helped me tell it. I have had creative input, all the way from the formatting of the pages, spacing in the text, and I chose my oover. I received assistance every time I took a step. When my book sells 5000 copies I WILL get my money back and I WILL be able to have a second book published without any cash outlay. No one mentioned that fact.

My book is professionally bound and beautifully formatted. As far as them printing in Texas, Tate Publishing is a PUBLISHER, not a printer. There is a difference.

I think you have been unfair and very unkind with your words, and, quite frankly, if your tone and expletives are any indication, I am glad we don't share a publisher!

I just want to say thank you to each one of you who helped in the process of my book. You have all been so nice to work with. I would recommend you to anyone looking to publish a book.

I never had the thought to write a book until God spoke it to my heart 2 ½ years ago. I didn’t know how to do any of this, but I told God that I would write and that I expected him to work out every detail of this book, and he has been soooo faithful to work out every detail and has just amazed me. I have so many stories of before this book came to you, one especially of how I found Tate publishing.

Last spring I submitted my book to Christian manuscripts submission online, hoping a publishing would be interested in this book. Last may God spoke fall to my heart on the timing of when that would happen. Well here is how I found your company.

My daughter was in soccer and we got to know this couple (Phil and Becky) during the season, she was a Christian and he wasn’t a believer. They were such a fun couple to sit with at each game. Third to the last game my daughter’s youth leaders came to watch and so I introduced them to Phil and Becky at the soccer game in July. Becky was talking with the youth leaders and then Phil looks at me and says “I don’t go to church.” I went home that night and thought he just kicked the door open to be witnessed to.

So my plan was with 2 games left to ask him what was keeping him from church. The day before the next game God spoke to my heart and said he wanted me to give Phil my book. I thought was a crazy idea, don’t know him well enough to give him my book, but God said to me I want him to hear about me the way you talk about me in your book. I wanted to be obedient but this was scary, I decided to obey, I printed off my manuscript and brought it to the 2^nd to last game. I told his wife ahead of time and she said “did you know he is an avid reader, he reads a book every night.” I was shocked, confirmation or what? So I asked him the question about what’s keeping him from church and we talked for a while. Then I gave him the book. The last game he came back and gave it to me, he read it the night I gave it to him and he looked at me and said “who are you going to have publish this.” I said I didn’t know yet. And he recommended to check out Tate (he knew someone that had a book published from you).

I had never heard of Tate, so I looked you up on the internet and submitted it to you. Then fall came and you called to tell me you were almost done reviewing it. I actually had another publisher call the same day. A couple weeks went by and I had to let the other publisher know with in 2 weeks if I wanted to sign with them. I didn’t know if you guys were going to say yes, so I prayed for God to show me which publisher to have and I prayed you’d call within the next week to tell me, the very next morning you call and accepted it, so I knew that I should walk through this process with Tate.

Thank you for taking this on. I need to tell you something, as I was looking for publishers God spoke a promise to my heart. What he said was I will bless the publisher that picks up this book and brings it into completion. I know that he will bless your company, in his ways. Thank you for being obedient, I believe what God has laid on my heart for those that are hurting is important, even if he only intends for it to touch just one person, it is worth it.

I wanted to share that with you all, God is so faithful as we follow what he asks of us.

They are filled with malcontents, unrealistic individuals, and those who monitor those web sites do nothing but create a forum for complaining and self-entitlement. The world does not owe you a living. If you view one of those sites you might be well served to consider the source. Complainers and nothing more. Call me on my personal cell number before you make any decisions about what you read on the world-wide web. It is total nonsense from people who do not have the ability to help you with the truth. I wish I had found Tate Publishing before I made the mistake of publishing my book with Dog Ear Publishing. It has been a nightmare experience for me, but my point here is only to report what happened. I am not trying to trash Dog Ear.

I will start with the positive. The book itself is very well made, and the cover is beautiful. The book has received rave reviews on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, and Powell's Books. This includes a recent five star review by Mid-West Book Review.

One might think that any publisher would be happy to have a book that is receiving rave reviews from total strangers. That is apparently not the case with Dog Ear.

I have been begging Dog Ear to send the book marks and post cards and other marketing materials that I paid for many months ago before they ever started working on the book. The book was published on November 24, 2008 and I still have no marketing materials from Dog Ear.

I had to beg Dog Ear to build the website that I paid for. When they finally got it ready I was so embarrassed by the way it looked that I paid another company to build a website that might actually sell some books.

I have told Dog Ear repeatedly that I have business groups setting up a very large book signing event, complete with press releases and probably TV interviews as well. Nevertheless, I still have not received any of the marketing materials.

I had to go to another source and have book marks made just so I would have something to use to help make people aware of the book. At this point I don't know if I will ever receive the book marks and other marketing materials from Dog Ear.

I also paid Dog Ear to make the book available through Kindle on Amazon, and to allow browsers to look inside the book on Amazon. Despite my constant reminders and begging, that still has not been set up.

Dog Ear told me to expect an 8-12 week timetable from submission to publishing. That also proved not to be true. I started emailing and calling after 8 weeks because I had heard nothing from Dog Ear.

It was about two weeks before I heard back from anyone. I received a huge apology that my book had gotten off the usual track, and promises were made that it would be expedited. These turned out to be empty promises.

Weeks later, with still no visible progress, I received the same apology and same assurances that publication of my book would receive priority attention. These were also empty promises.

With all the great reviews and attention that my book is receiving, I also regret using Dog Ear as a publisher because it does not have distribution and marketing channels for books that it publishes.

Because of all these problems that I had with Dog Ear, I started looking for other alternatives, and that is how I found Tate Publishing. I don't know if Tate Publishing will agree to publish a second edition of my book, but they are at least reading it, and they have been very prompt and courteous in responding to my inquiries.

If you have not made a decision about who to partner with on publishing a book, I recommend that you not make the same mistake that I made.

I had a great weekend at the North Texas Book Festival. Not many people turned out, but it was a great experience. I met two other Tate authors from Texas. Only two of my books sold, but that was more than several people around me sold. A young woman representing Hastings Book Store was there. She came to my table to talk to me about Tate Publishing. You are her favorite publisher. She said your books were higher quality than any she has seen and talks up your company every chance she gets. She borrowed one of my books to show some of the other authors. One comment she made was that Hastings had received a book once that was very thin, poor quality and the price was $20. She said if that had been Tate Publishing the price would have been $8.99.

If you are seeking money, then you have set up the wrong standard to write by. If you write for God or for the people to glorify God then you will succeed in the way that God meant for you to succeed.

The famous author Frank Herbert took six years to write "Dune" and won the Nebula and Hugo awards the same year for it. He was paid $7,500.00. It was a science fiction/fantasy with a religious allegory.

His children and his grandchildren finally saw an income from it but the author, like Moses, did not see the promised land while he yet was alive.

We are either meant to write or not meant to write. It is up to the author first, then the publisher, to make sure the book is the best it can be to present it to the public.

The money should not be a factor. If you want to make money then do that like other people and stay on a full-time job. If you do make money with your work that only proves you have earned the praise of some men. It still doesn't prove you earned any praise from God unless the work glorifies him in some way.

Recently There was an article about my story and book and in the same issue was an small ad by a retired NY State Trooper who wrote his fifth book. I E mailed him and asked him who his publisher was and he said Author House. He also said that he met another author at a book signing and he spoke to him about his publisher. This author said Tate Publishing. He said that they are the best and he would never go with anyone else. The Trooper then told me that he was so impressed that he seriously thought of changing publishers. I then researched your company and was very impressed and that is why I chose Tate. I would love to call you and talk to you .. . Maybe Police organizations might be an area for you to promote. It seems all us cops want to write stories. I will call next week.

Yesterday, April 21, marked the official release of The Twist in the Road, and with hundreds of advance copies in circulation nationwide, the response from people has been tremendous. My wife and I have received countless cards, letters, and e-mails, but the e-mail which follows is particularly heartwarming. My father, who is eighty-one years old (but lives life like he's forty-one) was in Nevada in February to meet an old friend (also eighty-one!) regarding a start-up aircraft company. My dad gave him a copy of my book. His friend lost his wife last year, and my dad thought that he might appreciate a copy of my book. The e-mail his friend sent me pretty much tells the story, so I am forwarding it to you with his permission.

A few years ago I made a promise to my writer friends that if I ever had a novel hit the top twenty of the New York Times mass market bestseller list that I would share all the information I was given about the book so writers could really see what it takes to get there. Today I’m going to keep that promise and give you the stats on my sixth Darkyn novel, Twilight Fall.

Here is the first royalty statement for Twilight Fall, on which I’ve only blanked out Penguin Group’s address. Everything else is exactly as I’ve listed it. To give you a condensed version of what all those figures mean, for the sale period of July through November 30, 2008. my publisher reports sales of 64,925 books, for which my royalties were $40,484.00. I didn’t get credit for all those sales, as 21,140 book credits were held back as a reserve against possible future returns, for which they subtracted $13,512.69 (these are not lost sales; I’m simply not given credit for them until the publisher decides to release them, which takes anywhere from one to three years.)

My net earnings on this statement was $27,721.31, which was deducted from my advance. My actual earnings from this statement was $0.

My advance for Twilight Fall was $50,000.00, a third of which I did not get paid until the book physically hit the shelf — this is now a common practice by publishers, to withhold a portion of the advance until date of publication. Of that $50K, my agent received $7,500.00 as her 15% (which she earns, believe me) the government received roughly $15,000.00, and $1594.27 went to cover my expenses (office supplies, blog giveaways, shipping, promotion, etc.) After expenses and everyone else was paid, I netted about $26K of my $50K advance for this book, which is believe it or not very good — most authors are lucky if they can make 10% profit on any book. This should also shut up everyone who says all bestselling authors make millions — most of us don’t.

I am not a real "blogger" like some of our staff who are prone to share their professional insight into the industry. I do that from time to time but many times I like to share phone calls, emails, letters, and other contacts I receive (and I get hundreds) from folks who talk about their experience with Tate Publishing. We are aware at Tate Publishing that manufacturing and producing a book is critical work but a critical part of our intense efforts is in marketing. I received the following email this week and I was so pleased I wanted to share this information with you. I am like a proud father of the work of our dozens of professionals in every division. The email was forwarded to me by one of our marketing staff.

I just spoke with the manager of a bookstore, whose name is Ray...he told me the following:

He recommends Tate Publishing to potential authors because he is familiar with our titles and is impressed with the quality of our cover design and editing. He said that he is approached by self-published authors at least twice a day, and “there is no comparison” between our product and the titles that the self-published authors present. In his words “you provide a valuable service.”

He knows we are selective, and that the titles we sell have gone through editing, design and layout. He was also impressed that our authors are assigned a marketing representative. He said he often deals with authors who are completely on their own, and their events are always failures. His store does carry Tate Publishing titles on the shelf.
Ray was impressed by the book signing event support that we offer to our authors, which he says nobody else provides, “unless you’re a bestselling author.”

Just thought I would pass along that some of our biggest fans are bookstores which are familiar with our work.

NO ECONOMIC WOES WITH TATE PUBLISHING OR TATE MUSIC GROUP!!!

I have been watching the economy with great interest as I am sure many of you are as well. I cannot pick up a newspaper, turn on the radio, or listen to the evening news without hearing that "Chicken Little" is running rampant across our nation proclaiming that "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!" I realize there are difficult issues Americans must face regarding their personal financial situations. My prayers are with them each day in my personal quiet time in the morning. Each Monday morning when our entire company meets for a time of prayer requests for our authors and staff we continue to lift up in prayer the financial needs of our fellow Americans.
The good news is that Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group are, in the midst of all that is happening, growing daily. We continue to add new jobs, and increase our sales and marketing position in both industries, while we maintain our corporate policy of remaining debt free. We have just improved our print and production facility and even though it was already state-of-the-art, the new color processing equipment just purchased and installed at our plant has taken our products to an even higher level of quality. If you are an author or artist with Tate Publishing or Tate Music Group, you are part of a growing, dynamic company that has never been in better financial condition. Thanks to each of you for makiing this possible and to all our outstanding staff who work with diligence and fervor to keep Tate at the top of the list of successful companies.

I am always pleased to get these kind of contacts from our authors...I wanted to share this with you. In Monday staff meetings each week our entire staff prays for author requests and the process of our company. We pray that our team will be a blessing to our authors. Here is a result of that company culture and our respect for our authors.

I received a frantic voice message late last night from one of our children's book authors. She left me a number to call back today about what she said was a critical problem with her book. When I called her back she immediately apologized for the late call and said that she had spoken with Jim Miller of our staff and everything was fine now and told me she did not need to speak with me after all and appreciated being able to have my cell number to call about possible problems. She went on to say that when she called her editor, Jim Miller, about her concern about something that had been accidentially left out of her book she said that he was, in her words, "Fabulous." She said, "Dr. Tate, Jim Miller is a true professional. When he called me back and we talked he was so wonderful, caring, and helpful that I had tears in my eyes of the gratitude for his work. I did not believe my story could be better than how I had written it. He not only made my story better but made it fabulous with his ideas, suggestions, and insight. He is typical of everyone I have worked with at your company. He returns phone calls and emails immediately, is polished and skilled, and treats me with great respect. I could not be happier with Tate Publishing and it is totally because of Jim Miller. I know that my work with him will be over very soon and I will be moving on to cover design and layout. I am excited to do that but I am deeply saddened that I will no longer be working with Jim. Please give him my thanks for making this problem go away so quickly." I told her I would inform Jim of her call and words. This effort is the standard we expect from every employee in the company.

VERY INTERESTING...WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!

From time to time, we see on the internet other companies try to discredit Tate Publishing. They get desperate in their attempts. One such company even has a brazen ad on their site which shouts, "Don't Use Tate Publishing." Their remarks are ludicrous and incorrect. When you do things like competitors sometimes do it eventually comes back to bite you. We received a lengthy email from an author who signed with that self-publishing vanity press with list after list of complaints, lack of service, failure to provide what was promised, and much more. We will not stoop to post those complaints sent to us (the reason for the email was that the author writing was contacting us to say he wished he had signed with Tate if we would have taken his book) about that publisher. Not our style. Just remember. When you read things on the internet make sure you check out the facts. We are sorry to hear about the bad experience but I am not at all surprised.

THINKING ABOUT NEGATIVE BLOGGING? THINK TWICE!

Blogging can be a nice communication and point of contact. It can share information, connect nice folks, update seekers regarding needs they have and how they can be met, and much more. However, we all are aware of the fact that there are a lot of "school yard bullies" out there who have made the internet and blogging their way of moaning, whining, and complaining without having to verify anything they are saying or accepting any cuplability, verification or responsibility. The saddest element is that some folks read this nonsense and believe it. Sad.
It was reported to me today by a friend in the publishing industry on the east coast that Writer's News Weekly is reporting that negative bloggers have been hit hard legally. It is high time they get what is coming to them that has been long overdue. David Kuzminiski who is the owner of Preditors and Editors has been sued for libel for his remarks on that "so-called" author friendly web site. He was hit with a $250,000.00 penalty award in favor of the press according to the report I received. There are two others against that same blog site which are pending their penalty award. To confirm any of this you may want to check the Writer's News Weekly web site. If I have any of my information wrong please let me know. If all of this is true, it is about time that those who have nothing more to do than complain and misrepresent have to "pay the piper." Planning to blog? Watch what you say and make sure it is true and responsible. We do.

AN AUTHOR'S VISIT TO TATE PUBLISHING

My visit to Tate Publishing
This past Friday I was in Oklahoma City for a conference and decided, at the invitation of my editor, to visit the offices at Tate Publishing. I've been in the business of boosting these guys and working very hard to ensure that their authors are satisfied and informed. I've been able to recommend them to several new authors, who then submitted material. I've worked many hours and at no compensation, so I figured it might be a good idea to at least stop by and see if it would actually live up to the image that I have been helping them project. Sure, I have been extremely satisfied with my experiences thus far and I wanted to lay eyes on the place for myself. The reception area is stylish with a friendly atmosphere. The girl working behind the counter was very perky when she asked how she might assist me. My editor walked down the hallway and began to show me around the cramped office building. Tate is actually spread out over several different campuses because they grew too fast for their infrastructure, and one of their major goals, my editor explained to me, was to eventually build one massive building that could house all branches of the company. There are now over one hundred employees, and as I poked my head into each office it seemed like all of them were sitting in four tiny rooms. Most employees operating under these conditions would be grouchy at their cramped workspace. I have worked in similar circumstances and remember just how crabby I was all the time. I'm sure everyone at Tate has their moments, but I was caught off guard at the genuinely warm greetings I was given at being introduced as one of the authors for the company. Each person took off their headsets, looked up from their screens, and put their phones on hold to say hello to me. I arrived at Dr. Tate's office, and he likewise put down his workload to greet me. He was very busy and there was going to be a company meeting that afternoon, but he took the time to chat with me a moment about how happy he was to meet me and to say that he looked forward to seeing me again in the future. I also met the marketing director and he was very friendly as well. After chatting with a few more people I asked if I could meet Ryan, the president of the company, but his secretary said that he was running around that day. Which was unfortunate, because I have spoken with him on the phone and looked forward to meeting him in person, but his being busy was consistent with the rest of the staff. They all looked and acted like they were moving with passion and purpose; something sorely missing in most work environments. I saw a stack of contracts sitting on the receptionist's desk awaiting Ryan's signatures. Next to those were books being examined by marketing representatives. Everyone, without exception, greeted me with a friendly smile. I did not warn them ahead of time that I was coming, nor did any of them know that I was the guy who ran the Tate author's blog so they could be putting on their best faces.Near the stack of contracts were two large mail bins stuffed and overflowing with envelopes. Dr. Tate, who had walked down the hallway at that point, grabbed me by the shoulder and asked, "Do you know what those are?" He was pointing at the bins of envelopes. I shook my head.He said, "Those are royalty checks. 1,400 of them. Best part of my job is signing those checks, because I love seeing how successful our authors are becoming. One check in that pile is a royalty check for $20,000. If you ever find someone who tells you we aren't a royalty publisher, tell them you saw this yourself."It was a theme I have picked up several times when speaking with Tate people. They are quite passionate at defending themselves against the attacks by some groups who claim they are a Print-on-Demand, or Self-publisher. This is not the case. They simply have a business model for publishing that more closely resembles other business models in the corporate world, and the older traditional publishers are green with envy.It works like this: suppose I were to bring you a product for you to sell. It has no proven history of sales, nor does it even appear that it works. But I will insist and demand that you pay an exorbitant amount of money to me for providing you with this product. You assume all the risk for it, assume all the costs for it, and if it fails, you lose a tremendous amount of money.That is the traditional publishing model, and it is why those companies are failing. Time magazine ran an article on this several weeks ago, which I linked to below in a previous blog entry.Tate Publishing took everything that worked for the traditional model (screening manuscripts selectively, providing structured editing and marketing, mainstream distribution) and threw away all of the areas that have proven to be failing (paying advances to every author, wasting millions of dollars on failed product, assuming all risk).The result is that an author is pre-screened for quality, then when they pass that test, they are offered a contract that best fits their book. If the book is exceptional and is clearly a marketing bombshell, that author is paid an advance and their book is published. Another option may be that the book is good but it might not sell enough to justify an advance quite yet, so the contract offered to the author is that Tate will assume all costs in producing the book. The third option, and the one that most authors fall under, is for the author to pay a relatively small amount (around $3,900) in relation to the production costs as an investment in their work, and Tate assumes all of the rest of the cost. This way, Tate's bottom line is protected, and their author has a vested interest in the book succeeding. The best part of this contract, though, is that as soon as the book sells 5,000 copies, that author investment is refunded and the author is offered an advance on their next book.This is the business model of the publishing future, and it is why this company has grown so fast that they are now considered a major publisher by Barnes and Noble--which means that they get a good shot at premium shelf space in Barnes and Noble stores. It makes no sense for an author to just simply expect a publisher to do everything for them. No one else in all of capitalism operates that way and succeeds.I left satisfied. They are exactly who they say they are. I even got to meet the people who have worked on my books, and they all expressed their enjoyment of the process

MY CROWS ARE THE "BLACKEST!"

My blog is often unlike the blogs of other executive staff in our company. My son, the President and CEO of Tate Publishing is industry "savvy" and his blogs are informative and full of industry insight. Other staff write about similar issues. Like a proud father I seem to gravitate to wanting to make my missive a "brag blog" more than it possibly should be. My grandfather had a saying that I did not understand at first. He would say about all of us grandchildren that, "My crows are the blackest!" We all know that ALL crows are equally black. He love for us was at the center of his "blackest" reference. When he looked at all the "crows" his stood out as "blacker" than the rest because of his appreciation for them. When it comes to our fine staff, they are, in my opinion, the "blackest." No one is better. That is why the following statements from a few of our authors are in my blog today. THANKS FOR THE INSIGHT FROM AN AUTHOR

Greetings:

I usually spend some time on Sunday (after church) playing around on the internet. Today, I found a discussion forum relating to experiences people have had with Tate Publishing. After reading every single post, something interesting occurred to me.

Most of the “unsatisfied” posts were from writers who simply forgot or ignored a key ingredient in any human endeavor. If you don’t have faith in the LORD, yourself, and your work, you will find it very easy to blame someone else for the lack of satisfactory results.

When I decided to publish with Tate, I knew that the effort would be a partnership between me, Tate, and the LORD. I have faith in my book because it is a message the LORD put on my heart and because of this, I will trust Him for the outcome. Win or lose, I have run the race.

TATE PUBLISHING IS ON THE "GROW" AGAIN

It is exciting to see the new faces in the hallways of the Tate Publishing building. Seven new staff members are now on board in various departments. With six buildings filled with the best in the industry it is getting more and more difficult to keep up with the names and faces. It is a blessing to see at a time when many companies are showing cut backs. Not here...and we are very thankful. I look forward to sharing some thoughts from time to time this year about how to publish successfully and how authors can get their books before the most people possible. Stay tuned!!

TATE PUBLISHING IS EXPANDING AND GROWING AT EVERY LEVEL

Last night I sat in a ballroom crowd of over 200 at the annual Tate Publishing Christmas Gala. Employees entertained, the food was fabulous, the ladies all looked beautifully festive and the men were in their "Sunday best." It was a grand, grand, time. However, the moment which always stands out to me is when my son, the President and CEO of Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group delivers his annual "State of the Company" address to the crowd of company staff. In these questionable economic times most business leaders are preaching cut backs and gloom and doom. But at Tate Publishing, year after year the applause simply "roars" from the crowd as Ryan Tate gives specific detail after specific detail outlining our growth, our expansion, and greater success, and higher book sales in every area year after year. Authors are having more success, we are adding new staff consistently to handle growth, and able to give more than ever to support charitable and faith-based causes around the world. We have never received more submissions, never schedule more events for authors, and our plant hums in book production filling book orders 24 hours a day. Our thanks to each of our authors. They are the heartbeat that makes it all work. Tate Publishing is growing...no doom and gloom here!

TATE PUBLISHING IS GROWING AND EXPANDING WHILE OTHER PUBLISHERS ARE DECLINING AND CUTTING BACK

Tate Publishing is experiencing unprecedented growth. We are so thrilled to have this kind of progressive corporate success at a time when others are cutting back and declining. We have just been informed by Ingram Wholesalers, the world's largest wholesale bookseller that we are the fastest growing publisher they have and that we are #17 in sales. We have never seen more submissions and are adding new staff in all departments. Growth is everywhere for which we are grateful. Royalties are climbing to authors and Tate Publishing remains debt free.

Recent new articles tell a different story around the industry. For instance:

-Simon & Schuster cut 2% of its total workforce.

-Michael Hyatt announced that Thomas Nelson is cutting 10% of its workforce.

-Random House axed some of its top people and announced it is restructuring--and will disband the Doubleday Publishing Group.

-It has been reported that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has let go of several employees (the company doesn't comment on personnel matters). Becky Saletan, the publisher, has been let go.

-Borders' stock price fell under one dollar. That's a very bad thing--if their stock price stays under $1 for ninety days, they have to do a consolidation of stock (the opposite of a stock split).

-Doubleday reported that The Gargoyle, a first novel for which it paid $1.25 million in advances, flopped, selling 34,000 copies.

-Penguin Group chairman and CEO John Makinson there will be no pay raises this year. He said he cannot guarantee there will be no job losses or layoffs in the coming year.

-Macmillan US Chief John Sargent set a pay freeze for all employees.

-Chronicle Books laid off 5% of it's staff last Monday.

I hate to see this happening but for those few authors who are signed with Tate Publishing, and for our incredible staff of dozens and dozens of fine professionals we are grateful for our growth which is a result of our hard work and the hard work of our fine authors. We are planning for a banner year in 2009.

TATE PUBLISHING AND THE ACORN TO THE OAK TREE

I was talking with an aspiring author today and could hear the excitement, enthusiasm, passion, and heart in every one of his words for his book. He, like so many I have spoken with over the years, want to profit financially but at the heart of his dream and vision was not money. It was something more powerful. He wants to see lives changed by people picking up his book, reading his thoughts, and implementing his ideas and principles in their lives. This is what really excited him and what was at the center of what he wanted as an aspiring writer.
As he spoke on, I kept glancing at a small item I have had on my desk for years. It is a simple acorn. A little tiny acorn. It is a constant reminder to me that all great achievements start small and with nurture and persistence they can become a mighty oak. As the old parable states when the man asked God to make him like a mighty oak, God answered, "Certainly," and gave him an acorn. Starting as a published author is so similar. You must work with us as your publisher to get the book done well, produced beautifully, marketed with enthusiasm, and then watch it grow. Eventually you have a mighty oak that casts benefit and shade to all who gather under it's branches. The pages of your book is filled with leaves. The leaves of a book and the leaves of a mighty oak tree are so similar. They both take time and lot's of effort. We partner together to make that happen. We are gratified to have been informed that in 2009 we will be one of the top ten book sellers in the industry with the world's largest book wholesaler. It did not happen overnight. Remember the lesson of the acorn. We have.

PUBLISHING A BOOK WITH TATE PUBLISHING SUCCESS FOR AUTHORS

I was "musing" today about this publishing world and aspiring authors and as Disney's Snow White I felt like standing at the wishing well and singing my own version of "I'm Wishing." She was wishing for a handsome prince. I would be wishing for ten minutes on national television to speak to the 85% of all Americans who we are told by the AAP say they have a book in them. There is so much misunderstanding about how the system works today and the myriad of options available. Self-publishing, vanity presses, subsidy publishing, imprints, traditional publishing, and the list of options is seemingly endless. At Tate Publishing, we have developed an immensely successful model which gives aspiring authors their only real hope at the traditional publishing model. We can give an author an advance if their project and author profile meet certain specifications. The rules we use to determine whether an advance is justified (and we have given many, many author advances over the years) is the exact same process that any traditional publisher uses. We received in 2007 tens of thousands of submissions from around the world and only 3% were considered for publication. At least those individuals who submitted had a chance for publishing. No one else is even looking at or accepting unsolicited manuscripts. The biggest difference in the few authors who get to publish with Tate Publishing is this key element. We give them a great opportunity. This week alone we gave two second book authors with us nice advances. The have earned it. I will just keep on telling the story correctly and leave the "wishing well" to Disney princesses for now.

Tate Publishing authors Les and Sharon Duncan to Appear on LifeTime Television’s HealthCorner

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: October 14, 2008. Les and Sharon Duncan are scheduled to be on the season premier of the popular television series, HealthCorner, January 4th, 2009.

Les, the author of Brain Storms; Surviving Catastrophic Illness, and a survivor of four brain hemorrhages and two brain surgeries suffers from cavernous angioma, an incurable disease that causes veins in the brain and spine to become knotted and tangled, and sometimes bleed resulting in stroke and/or seizure.

“Each time Les had a brain hemorrhage our lives changed instantly. One moment, he was able to see, hear, walk, and talk – the next minute he was severely handicapped and so many things we had taken for granted were gone”, says Sharon Duncan.

Cavernous angioma is the most common form of vascular malformation in the world, affecting 1 in every 150 people, but it is little known because the condition is often mis-diagnosed as an aneurysm or stroke without exploring the underlying cause. In a recent interview Les said, “There is a real need to raise awareness of this debilitating disease both in the medical community and amongst the general public. I am honored that Lifetime TV and Health Corner have given us this opportunity.” They always wanted to publish a book on this subject and Tate Publishing Company made their dream a reality.
