TATE PUBLISHING IS EXPANDING AND GROWING AT EVERY LEVEL

Last night I sat in a ballroom crowd of over 200 at the annual Tate Publishing Christmas Gala. Employees entertained, the food was fabulous, the ladies all looked beautifully festive and the men were in their "Sunday best." It was a grand, grand, time. However, the moment which always stands out to me is when my son, the President and CEO of Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group delivers his annual "State of the Company" address to the crowd of company staff. In these questionable economic times most business leaders are preaching cut backs and gloom and doom. But at Tate Publishing, year after year the applause simply "roars" from the crowd as Ryan Tate gives specific detail after specific detail outlining our growth, our expansion, and greater success, and higher book sales in every area year after year. Authors are having more success, we are adding new staff consistently to handle growth, and able to give more than ever to support charitable and faith-based causes around the world. We have never received more submissions, never schedule more events for authors, and our plant hums in book production filling book orders 24 hours a day. Our thanks to each of our authors. They are the heartbeat that makes it all work. Tate Publishing is growing...no doom and gloom here!

TATE PUBLISHING IS GROWING AND EXPANDING WHILE OTHER PUBLISHERS ARE DECLINING AND CUTTING BACK

Tate Publishing is experiencing unprecedented growth. We are so thrilled to have this kind of progressive corporate success at a time when others are cutting back and declining. We have just been informed by Ingram Wholesalers, the world's largest wholesale bookseller that we are the fastest growing publisher they have and that we are #17 in sales. We have never seen more submissions and are adding new staff in all departments. Growth is everywhere for which we are grateful. Royalties are climbing to authors and Tate Publishing remains debt free.

Recent new articles tell a different story around the industry. For instance:

-Simon & Schuster cut 2% of its total workforce.

-Michael Hyatt announced that Thomas Nelson is cutting 10% of its workforce.

-Random House axed some of its top people and announced it is restructuring--and will disband the Doubleday Publishing Group.

-It has been reported that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has let go of several employees (the company doesn't comment on personnel matters). Becky Saletan, the publisher, has been let go.

-Borders' stock price fell under one dollar. That's a very bad thing--if their stock price stays under $1 for ninety days, they have to do a consolidation of stock (the opposite of a stock split).

-Doubleday reported that The Gargoyle, a first novel for which it paid $1.25 million in advances, flopped, selling 34,000 copies.

-Penguin Group chairman and CEO John Makinson there will be no pay raises this year. He said he cannot guarantee there will be no job losses or layoffs in the coming year.

-Macmillan US Chief John Sargent set a pay freeze for all employees.

-Chronicle Books laid off 5% of it's staff last Monday.

I hate to see this happening but for those few authors who are signed with Tate Publishing, and for our incredible staff of dozens and dozens of fine professionals we are grateful for our growth which is a result of our hard work and the hard work of our fine authors. We are planning for a banner year in 2009.

TATE PUBLISHING AND THE ACORN TO THE OAK TREE

I was talking with an aspiring author today and could hear the excitement, enthusiasm, passion, and heart in every one of his words for his book. He, like so many I have spoken with over the years, want to profit financially but at the heart of his dream and vision was not money. It was something more powerful. He wants to see lives changed by people picking up his book, reading his thoughts, and implementing his ideas and principles in their lives. This is what really excited him and what was at the center of what he wanted as an aspiring writer.
As he spoke on, I kept glancing at a small item I have had on my desk for years. It is a simple acorn. A little tiny acorn. It is a constant reminder to me that all great achievements start small and with nurture and persistence they can become a mighty oak. As the old parable states when the man asked God to make him like a mighty oak, God answered, "Certainly," and gave him an acorn. Starting as a published author is so similar. You must work with us as your publisher to get the book done well, produced beautifully, marketed with enthusiasm, and then watch it grow. Eventually you have a mighty oak that casts benefit and shade to all who gather under it's branches. The pages of your book is filled with leaves. The leaves of a book and the leaves of a mighty oak tree are so similar. They both take time and lot's of effort. We partner together to make that happen. We are gratified to have been informed that in 2009 we will be one of the top ten book sellers in the industry with the world's largest book wholesaler. It did not happen overnight. Remember the lesson of the acorn. We have.

Whether your efforts, in any one project, reach hundereds or thousands, they can never go unnoticed. PUBLISHING A BOOK WITH TATE PUBLISHING SUCCESS FOR AUTHORS

I was "musing" today about this publishing world and aspiring authors and as Disney's Snow White I felt like standing at the wishing well and singing my own version of "I'm Wishing." She was wishing for a handsome prince. I would be wishing for ten minutes on national television to speak to the 85% of all Americans who we are told by the AAP say they have a book in them. There is so much misunderstanding about how the system works today and the myriad of options available. Self-publishing, vanity presses, subsidy publishing, imprints, traditional publishing, and the list of options is seemingly endless. At Tate Publishing, we have developed an immensely successful model which gives aspiring authors their only real hope at the traditional publishing model. We can give an author an advance if their project and author profile meet certain specifications. The rules we use to determine whether an advance is justified (and we have given many, many author advances over the years) is the exact same process that any traditional publisher uses. We received in 2007 tens of thousands of submissions from around the world and only 3% were considered for publication. At least those individuals who submitted had a chance for publishing. No one else is even looking at or accepting unsolicited manuscripts. The biggest difference in the few authors who get to publish with Tate Publishing is this key element. We give them a great opportunity. This week alone we gave two second book authors with us nice advances. The have earned it. I will just keep on telling the story correctly and leave the "wishing well" to Disney princesses for now.

Tate Publishing authors Les and Sharon Duncan to Appear on LifeTime Television’s HealthCorner

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: October 14, 2008. Les and Sharon Duncan are scheduled to be on the season premier of the popular television series, HealthCorner, January 4th, 2009.

Les, the author of Brain Storms; Surviving Catastrophic Illness, and a survivor of four brain hemorrhages and two brain surgeries suffers from cavernous angioma, an incurable disease that causes veins in the brain and spine to become knotted and tangled, and sometimes bleed resulting in stroke and/or seizure.

“Each time Les had a brain hemorrhage our lives changed instantly. One moment, he was able to see, hear, walk, and talk – the next minute he was severely handicapped and so many things we had taken for granted were gone”, says Sharon Duncan.

Cavernous angioma is the most common form of vascular malformation in the world, affecting 1 in every 150 people, but it is little known because the condition is often mis-diagnosed as an aneurysm or stroke without exploring the underlying cause. In a recent interview Les said, “There is a real need to raise awareness of this debilitating disease both in the medical community and amongst the general public. I am honored that Lifetime TV and Health Corner have given us this opportunity.” They always wanted to publish a book on this subject and Tate Publishing Company made their dream a reality.

HARPER COLLINS CUTS AUTHOR ADVANCES

HarperCollins to Cut Writer Advances

HarperCollins Publishers is forming a new publishing group that will substitute profit and cost sharing with authors instead of cash advances and will eliminate the costly practice of allowing booksellers to return unsold copies.
In a move that surprised many industry insiders, HarperCollins announced on Thursday that Robert S. Miller, the founding publisher of Hyperion, the adult books division of the Walt Disney Company, would leave his post of 17 years to lead this new, as yet unnamed entity.
The new unit is HarperCollins effort to address what its executives see as some of the more vexing issues of the book industry. The idea is, Lets take all the things that we think are wrong with this business and try to change them, said Mr. Miller, 51. It really seemed to require a start-up from scratch because it will be very experimental.
The new group will also release electronic books and digital audio editions of all its titles, said Jane Friedman, president and chief executive of HarperCollins, a unit of theNews Corporation.
At this moment of real volatility in the book business, when we are all recognizing things that are difficult to contend with, like growing advances and returns and that people are reading more online, we want to give them information in any format that they want.
The new group is entering a difficult market for books generally. Citing economic uncertainty, the Borders Group announced last month that it was considering selling itself. Barnes & Noble also said it expected first-quarter results to be slightly down from the previous year.
Author advances and bookseller returns have long troubled the publishing industry. Best-selling authors can command advances so high that publishers often come away with slim profits, even for books that are significant successes. Publishers also sometimes offer high advances to untested authors in the hopes of creating new hits, but those gambles do not pan out.

CAN YOU GET AN AUTHOR ADVANCE FROM TATE PUBLISHING?

FIRST: REMEMBER, BOOKS ARE NOT BOUGHT, BOOKS ARE SOLD AND SUPPLY AND INVENTORY DOES NOT DRIVE DEMAND.

I am delighted to respond to this question which comes to me frequently. Tate Publishing is proud of our history of accepting for review unsolicited manuscripts from unknown authors. We also publish the works of authors who are household names. We look at all manuscripts on the basis of four elements. First, when our staff reviews each work sbumitted on the basis of the potential of an author advance. Each potential advance has several critical elements which include the potential of the author, the subject, etc. We have given advances from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars to authors. Second, we review a work, if it does not meet our criteria for an advance, on the basis of no advance but no financial investment from the author. With this level Tate Publishing absorbs all of the financial risk. We have many authors each year who qualify at this level. It ALWAYS has to do with marketability and the potential of the individual author. Next, we have the author investment program. This fabulous industry renovating offer to an author is only given to the few (we receive tens of thousands of manuscripts and in 2007 only 3.5% made the cut) who we believe we can sell at least 5,000 copies of the book. Once the book sells 5,000 we REFUND the author investment of $3,985.50 and guarantee an advance for the next book. Many authors have enjoyed this success. So, do you want an advance? NEW TATE PUBLISHING AUTHOR JUST POSTED THESE KIND REMARKS

My manuscript has been accepted by Tate and I am thrilled and feel very blessed. I researched publishing houses for several years and always found myself going back to Tate. They're honest and upfront and very professional. What unknown writers need to remember is this; most "traditional" publishers won't even take a glance at an unsolicited writer's work. The manuscripts that these writers poured their souls into are either marked "return to sender" without even being looked at or they're destroyed. Tate offers an upfront and informative way for the first time author, to get their work in print and out into the mainstream bookstores. Sounds like a win-win situation to this first time author. What I'd like Tate to know, is that with W.J. Harding, they've signed an energetic, go getter who promises good writing and even better selling and who also promises to be just one, of Tate Publishing's upcoming successes...not only personal success but an asset to Tate. Thank you for your excitement about Extreme Makeover. God has blessed us so much. I was truly a miracle to be chosen. We found out the air date will be Sunday evening on November 16th. I am thrilled that you will watch it. It will almost be like you are meeting my children. You will love them, they are terrific. Please tell the others at Tate them I am honored that they are going to watch the show. I am praying that God will use this show as an opportunity to open the door for people in my city to come to know Jesus, and to learn how to have compassion on others in the community. We are hoping that this will be a big step for Toledo. Please pray, it has been a long time since our city was positive about anything - especially God.

FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME A CALL FOR A PERSONAL CONVERSATION ANYTIME ABOUT YOUR QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS-1-888-361-9473

Have you ever gotten a letter, email, or even a phone message from an "anonymous" person? I find it fascinating that from time to time I get messages from an "anonymous" individual. You never know if the person is for real or not since they seem to be fearful of their identity. I have written political figures from US Presidents to our local council people with concerns, disagreements, and issues, but have NEVER sent it from me as "anonymous." It just makes no sense to me to want to express an opinion and get a resolve but not let the person I am writing know who is writing. I would not be afraid of the truth and I am not sure why "anonymous" folks are fearful and hide behind that word. I am proud to stand for what I believe with my name, phone number, and address. If I disagree or agree I want you to know who I am. I am not afraid to take responsibility for my statements and actions. I have never, and never will, hide behind, "anonymous." If you are "anonymous" then you should remain just that...ignored until you are willing to show your face and have confidence that your position has validity.

The following statement about "anonymous" writers is directly from the http://www.wikihow.com/ website which deals with issues such as this.

"Anonymous letters can be both psychologically and ethically difficult to deal with. This is because the author usually knows that he/she will have free reign with the content of their letter. This tends to make the letter writer over confident as well as highly critical. Psychologically and morally they are no longer bound by the rules of society and instead act as they would if no person were there to judge them."

I would certainly do not plan to judge anyone but would love to have the opportunity to learn from "anonymous" something valuable more than the fact that they do not want to take responsibility for their words and actions. I would never post a statement or question on this blog from "anonymous" since I do not know if they are serious about the question or about the truth. Too bad, conversation and interaction can do wonders...for everyone but "anonymous." I am confident that if I sent "anonymous" an "anonymous" email it would not be well received and "anonymous" would not be a happy "anonymous" person. If any potential authors, current authors, or just interested folks want to call or chat...let's do it face to face. "Anonymous" just does not work for me and I doubt it works for you either.

TATE PUBLISHING LAWSUITS AGAINST LYING BLOG SITES SUPPORTED BY AGENTS AND PUBLISHERS ACROSS AMERICA

Since we have attempted to negotiate with many blog sites which simply are lying to unsuspecting authors about the publishing industry (not only about Tate Publishing but many other publishers and agents as well) to tell the truth we have been forced to take legal action. Tate Publishing is now joining other publishers by filing trademark infringement and copyright violation lawsuits against  Absolutewrite, Writersnet, Writerbeware, and several other individuals and web sites. Word has gotten around the industry of our action and I am getting support emails from publishers and others. These lies misrepresent the truth and cause great grief for aspiring authors. The following email is typical of what I am getting.

Dear Mr. Tate,
Thank you so much for standing up against Absolutewrite.com. You are not only representing Tate Publishing, but hundreds of independent publishers and literary agencies that have been falsely judged by disparaging, hurtful and libelous comments on the Internet. Blogs and web sites that offer free advice to "save unknowing writers from being used by scam artists" have some sort of motivation for doing so. Whether that incentive is to draw an audience to offered services or products, benefit through the sale of advertising on their site, or most likely to influence readers with a self-serving agenda—there’s definitely some underlying reason for what might at first appear to be virtuous and altruistic actions.
Martin-McLean Literary Associates, LLC has been successfully selling mss and giving new writers a chance since 1986. The Internet has created many new obstacles, however, we've stayed on course, concentrating on selling mss for our clients and doing our best to ignore what goes on in cyberspace. Unfortunately, a lot of valuable time is wasted on defending ourselves and responding to questions written by potential writers or worried clients.

TATE PUBLISHING ONCE AGAIN AHEAD OF THE PACK

I was just informed by a member of our executive staff that a 100 year old New York publishing house has decided to assist their authors with a "self-help" web site "kit." Those authors of that house will have to pay to host their site. Very nice of them to do that. However, Tate Publishing authors for some time have been provided by Tate Publishing with a web site which our staff will create, establish and set-up, manage for them, and MOST OF ALL we PAY FOR THE HOSTING!! Once again, when it comes to being the best and leading the way, I am proud of our staff and their work. Tate Publishing is ahead of the pack and will continue to do so...Have a great weekend.

WHY TATE PUBLISHING IS THE BEST OPTION IN THE INDUSTRY FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

I know that this post this morning is a "monster" in length, but I wanted to say some things that I believe are very important about our fine company and staff. There is so much confusion in the world wide web that I hope you will take a few moments to read the following information about Tate Publishing. Enjoy!

As I was sitting in my office I kept thinking, what would I need to know about a publisher to make a decision about my book? What is going through an authors head as they contemplate this industry? I hope you this post will address your questions.

According to the AAP America buys 4.5 million books every day, 1.6 billion per year. America counts for only 5 percent of the world population, yet Americans purchase 35 percent of all books that are sold worldwide. The majority of Americans never see the inside of a bookstore. 75% of all books are bought elsewhere. Less than 1% of all authors who have written a book are allowed free access to the majority of the readers in America. Today, over 270,000 new books are published each year and yet there are 16% fewer bookstores to sell those books.

At Tate Publishing, we want God's perfect will to be accomplished for your dream of publication as well as the goal of our publishing company to succeed with the books of unknown authors. We were thrilled to be named by a national writer's association in 2006 as "The Publisher of the Year." Our focus on helping our authors was one of the reasons we were selected for this honor from many publishers that were under consideration. We receive tens of thousands of manuscripts each year and only accept a tiny fraction for publication and distribution. We want your book and only few ever hear that from us or any publisher.

We accept books in three ways. 1-We look at the book on the basis of it meriting one of our generous author advances. 2-We consider a book on the basis of Tate Publishing absorbing 100% of the financial risk and the author having no personal investment. 3-We absorb 90+% of the risk and the author has an investment of only $3,985.50. The best thing about item 3 is that once the book sells at least 5,000 copies we refund the author investment and on the author's next book we either offer an advance or the author has NO financial investment.

5 VERY IMPORTANT functions for a Tate Publishing author

1- A TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER HAS DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS SET UP THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR MAKING YOUR BOOK AVAILABLE IN STORES.

Publishers are set up with wholesalers who warehouse their product for them. Book stores order directly through database systems that wholesalers have set-up so orders are done professionally and easily. 99% of all bookstores in the country do not work on consignment. If you want your book to be available in any store, the first question that store manager will ask is, “From whom do we order the book?” If you answer, “From me,” that store is no longer interested. They don’t want to deal directly with authors, because they would be dealing with hundreds and hundreds of authors begging the store to have a copy of their book in that store. Also, publishers have return policies that protect stores from having product that they purchase and couldn’t sell. No store wants to have to deal with 500 individuals at a time. They want to deal with one wholesaler they can contact to buy all the books they want. Tate Publishing works with the largest most dependable wholesaler in the country- Spring Arbor/Ingram. They distribute to every major retail chain and brick and mortar store in North America. All we have to say to any store we talk to is, “That book is available through Spring Arbor/Ingram.” The book store manager lets out a sigh of relief and orders the books.

2- A TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER HAS THE ABILITY TO PRINT AS MANY COPIES THAT ANY BOOK STORE, WHOLESALER, OR CHAIN COULD REQUIRE.

As an author, if a major retail chain asks for 10,000 copies of your book, would you be able to fill that order by yourself? Could you print, package and fund that order knowing that you won’t see any return on your cash outlay for at least 120 days? If you answered, “yes,” then you don’t need a publisher. We own and operate a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art printing facility and can print as many copies as needed of your book for distribution. We are also in the large press division with the major book buyers.

3- A TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER REPRESENTS YOUR BOOK DIRECTLY TO BUYERS AND OTHER INDIVIDUALS THAT DECIDE WHAT BOOKS A STORE WILL CARRY.

No author can call the buyer for a major chain and say, “I would like to meet with you about this book I wrote.” They don’t have time to sit down with thousands of authors with great books and talk about why he or she believes that book will sell. BUT, as a publisher, we can sit down across from our normal buyers with whom we have relationships with and say, “This is the book, this is the author, this is why you need it and MORE IMPORTANTLY, this is how much money we are spending to promote it.” Our marketing staff does this each month on your behalf and we sell to 26 chains in North America as well as distribute in Great Britain, Canada, and Australia. If a buyer for on of these chains of bookstores decides to carry your book, they want to know that a) the order will be filled in a timely fashion b) deadlines will be met c) catalog space (our last feature-book in on major chain store catalog cost a little under $4,000) will be funded promptly and your space will be professionally designed. I just spoke with a potential author that recently received a contract from us. During our conversation she mentioned she had been to a Berean bookstore in her area requesting to see a copy of a book published by Tate. .. they were extremely helpful .. . The author also went to an independent Christian store and was told the same thing. She was even asked to come back for a book signing at both stores when her book is published! DO YOU GET TIRED OF COMPLAINERS AND CRITICAL PEOPLE?

I usually don't plan to post twice in a day here but I could not pass up making some statements which I hope will encourage you to get on a right path. In America today there are just too many people who feel a sense of "entitlement" and that self-absorbed arrogance is causing a level of increased complainers and critics that I have not seen in my over sixty years. We simply do not allow complainers at Tate Publishing. Tate Publishing staff are, however, encourged to inform when something is not working, or is being handled badly. We NEVER shut down those on our staff who have an observation related to what we can do better, more effectively, or when we have dropped the ball. What we expect is the recognition of a problem or issue and then the presentation of a possible solution or solutions. We take responsibility. Tate Publishing employees NEVER criticize another company...NEVER. It is one thing to offer insight that might be contrary to what I believe. That insight, however, can be a blessing. But to just criticize and not take responsibility for that fact that you are just angry that life is not easy for you is simply awful. Read the words below of President Theodore Roosevelt and consider what he was saying and how it applies to our current society of bellyachers! People want to blog and complain but never justify their remarks or be held accountable for them.

GOOD MONDAY MORNING FROM TATE PUBLISHING

It is a beautiful Monday here at Tate Publishing and football, fall festivals, and family fun is certainly in the air. I was so delighted this morning that as I walked to the Tate Publishing building from our parking lot this morning that the cheery faces of our wonderful staff brightened my day immediately. They are not young people but because I am such an "OLD" guy they all look so enthusiastic and full of enthusiasm. I am proud of the dozens and dozens of Tate Publishing staff members who work diligently every day to assist each of the few authors we sign to achieve their dreams.
At the very moment I sat down at my desk my phone rang. It was one of our authors calling from the east coast. Diane was wanting to tell me how much it meant to her that she had been able to get published and how wonderful it was working with our staff. She said that they always stayed in touch, took her project seriously, met and exceeded every expectation, and even more. We get enough criticism from time to time from aspiring authors who do not understand why we would reject their manuscript for publication. It is always a delight to hear from someone who has ACTUALLY WORKED with us and our staff who shares with me their exceptionally positive experience. That is our minimum goal with each author who signs with Tate Publishing. Have a great Monday yourself and may all your phone calls be positive!
